HIKING OLD MAN STORR
What you need to know when visiting Old Man Storr on Isle of Skye
Where: Near Portree on the Isle of Skye, Scotland.
Parking: Free parking is available on the main road. Check out the map below for the exact location.
Level of Difficulty: Moderate. The path is well groomed at the beginning, and well-traveled all the way to the top. However, it is a steep and steady incline all the way to the viewpoint shown in the pictures here.
The Hike: There are three main sections of the climb. It traverses the same path up and down for a total of about 4 kilometers. After 15-20 minutes you should reach the top of the first stage. Here you will already begin to appreciate the panoramic views over the bay and start to see the unique rock formations on the hillside. The next two stages offer more of the same.Keep pushing up the hill as the views from the top are absolutely worth the effort. The total climb should take around an hour, more with additional breaks.Count on 2 or more hours round trip, depending on your pace.
Weather: We visited in July, so naturally the weather was unpredictable and ever-changing. If it starts to rain, we would honestly recommend waiting it out. Within 10-20 minutes it will likely stop and some sunshine might even peek through. Around October is when weather might begin to shift and become colder with possible icy conditions, so plan your trip accordingly.
What to wear:Though it is an easy hike, we would recommend wearing comfortable athletic wear and hiking shoes. Don’t forget to bring light layers and a rain coat or poncho.
